Wansbrough Paper Mill, Somerset

Wansbrough Paper Mill, Somerset

Project Description

Discipline(s): Paper Mill
Sector: Manufacturing
Location: Somerset
Project Duration: 12 Months

The Wansbrough paper mill in Somerset closed in December 2015 after 265 years. Following over 12 months of discussion, due diligence and negotiation, our associated company purchased the paper mill site and contracted Euro Demolition & Dismantling Ltd to carry out the demolition works in readiness for future redevelopment of the site.

The paper mill was a complex and vast site with many different types of buildings and structures situated on land circa 42 acres, located within close proximity to a live railway line and next to the stunning Somerset coastline.

Demolition Works

The structures we demolished on the paper mill site consisted of steel frame and brick buildings that had been built on the site over the last 265 years.  The works also included the removal of various tanks located around the site.

Prior to demolition, method statements were compiled for each phase of the works addressing the particular Health, Safety and Environmental risks and hazards for each particular building.

Methods

The general method which was applied was the cold cutting technique, employing a 360 degree demolition excavator with both a grab and shear attachment.  (Exclusion zones were established for each building during the demolition operations)

The site was then delivered to the client in readiness for development of housing, commercial and industrial premises.
