DS Smith Paper Mill – Somerset

Project Description

Client: Huntley Wood Investments Ltd
Discipline(s): Paper Mill
Sector: Manufacturing
Location: Somerset
Project Duration: 12 Months

DS Smith Paper Mill, Somerset closed in December 2015 after 265 years. Following over 12 months of discussion, due diligence and negotiation, Huntley Wood Investments purchased the paper mill site and have contracted Euro Demolition & Dismantling Ltd to carry out the demolition works in readiness for future redevelopment of the site.

The paper mill is a complex and vast site with many different types of buildings and structures on a site covering over 42 acres.  The site is located close to the railway line and next to the stunning Somerset coastline.

Demolition Works

The buildings on the paper mill site consist of steel frame and brick buildings that have been built on the site over the last 265 years, water streams running underneath the site.  The works also include the removal of various tanks located around the site.

Prior to demolition of each building an assessment is carried out to ensure that each building has a task / building specific method station, addressing the particular health, safety and environmental risks and hazards for that building.

The general method to be employed will be that using remote demolition techniques, employing a 360 degree demolition excavator and both a grab attachment and shear attachment applying cold cutting techniques where required.  Exclusion zones are established for each building during the demolition operations.

Following in-depth surveys of the site by our in-house health and safety team and engineers, we are now carrying out the task of demolishing the buildings and other structures on site, under stringent health and safety procedures (maintaining our excellent health and safety record).  Once all demolitions and site clearance works are completed the site will be delivered to the client in readiness for development of housing, commercial and industrial premises.

Works are currently ongoing on site.
